Welcome to the Old Catholic Institute
Forming clergy and church leaders for faithful, sacramental, and pastoral ministry in the Old Catholic tradition.
If you are discerning a call to ordained ministry, seeking deeper theological formation, or looking for practical preparation for the work of the Church, you are welcome here. The Old Catholic Institute exists to form ministers who can preach the Gospel, serve the altar, care for souls, and lead with wisdom, humility, and faith.
A Warm Welcome to Those Seeking Their Next Step
Ministry begins with grace, but it also requires formation. A calling must be nurtured, tested, and strengthened in the life of the Church. That is why the Old Catholic Institute is here. We are not simply offering courses. We are helping people prepare for real service in Christ’s Church.
Whether you are just beginning to ask whether God may be calling you, returning to ministry with renewed seriousness, or seeking continuing education for work you are already doing, this is a place to begin with prayer, clarity, and hope.
Rooted in an Old Catholic Heritage
The Old Catholic Institute stands in the Old Catholic tradition of the Netherlands, dating back to 1122 CE. We are Old Catholics not by fashion or trend, but by inheritance, conviction, sacramental life, and a living commitment to the historic Catholic faith.
Our work is shaped by a tradition that is Catholic in worship, Apostolic in ministry, and pastoral in mission. We believe clergy should be formed not only in theology, but in prayer, reverence, pastoral care, and practical service. The goal is not to produce abstract scholars. The goal is to form faithful ministers.
Formation for Real Ministry
The Old Catholic Institute offers formation that is meant to serve the real needs of the Church. Our work is not centered on theory alone. It is centered on ministry. We want students to grow in theological depth, biblical understanding, liturgical confidence, pastoral sensitivity, and the habits of faithful service.
Formation at the Institute is designed to help prepare clergy and church leaders who can:
- Preach and teach the faith clearly
- Serve reverently in the liturgy
- Care for people with compassion and maturity
- Think theologically and pastorally
- Lead with humility, steadiness, and conviction
The Church does not need ministers who are merely credentialed. It needs ministers who are formed.
For Those Discerning a Call to Holy Orders
If you sense that God may be calling you to serve as a deacon or priest, we want to say two things clearly: first, you are welcome; second, discernment matters.
A call to ministry should be encouraged, but it should also be tested with honesty, patience, and care. You do not need to arrive with everything figured out. You do need a willingness to listen, learn, pray, and grow. The Church is looking for more than interest. It is looking for faith, stability, humility, teachability, and readiness for service.
If that describes where you are, then this may be the right place to begin the conversation.
A Pathway for Learning, Growth, and Service
Some come to the Institute because they are preparing for Holy Orders. Others come because they want to deepen their theological grounding, strengthen their ministry, or continue growing in service to the Church. Both belong here.
This is a place for serious study, but it is also a place for spiritual growth. It is a place where vocation can be tested, gifts can be refined, and ministers can be equipped for faithful service in the world.

A Personal Invitation to Prospective Clergy
If you are exploring a call to ministry, do not ignore that stirring. Bring it to prayer. Bring it into conversation. Bring it into the life of the Church.
The Old Catholic Institute exists to help prospective clergy move from uncertainty to clarity, from desire to formation, and from formation to faithful service. We are here to help you discern well, prepare seriously, and serve Christ’s people with integrity.
